In order to find out, Arnaud and colleagues set up a randomized clinical trial in 19 healthy participants. During five treatment sessions, the two compounds were measured under a variety of physiological conditions. The researchers then analyzed the plasma levels of these two compounds over the course of six months. "We found that after a single session of administration of one of the two compounds, the levels of a specific somatotropic hormone were higher after two days than after four days of administration," explains Arnaud. "The higher concentrations were not comparable, however, between individuals. They were quite different. The high level of one of the compounds is found mainly in patients with Type 2 diabetes, which cannot cope with insulin to maintain normal blood glucose levels. The somatotropic hormone is also found in the bodies of Type 1 diabetic patients. In both these situations, the low concentration was related to a poor response to insulin." In fact, the authors believe that a high level of high-protein diets – the main type of diet prescribed by the authors of this study – can cause high doses of the somatotropic hormone to be produced. They believe that even high levels of protein can increase levels of their other counterpart, glucagon, which could further contribute to the formation of a high level of endogenous glucose. According to Dr. Arnaud, a more thorough understanding of the differences between the two compounds would be important to the health of modern society. "Somatic proteins, which are derived from dietary carbohydrates, are known to produce hormones that trigger the appetite and thus contribute to weight gain. We currently do not know if the high level of Fragment 176-191 could be responsible for an increased appetite in the modern diet. But we do know that the protein and fat intake of a very obese person can affect the concentration of amino acids in the gut, which affects the level of the hormone somatomedin-B and consequently the appetite."
